God Does not Have, or Want, Rights! (Sat Jul 15, 2006 9:54 am ) "One can only do good for human beings in God's name. One can only defend God's rights, honor and glory by defending the rights, honor and glory of human beings. God does not have, or want, rights. If that seems surprising, let us say that God's right is simply the fulfillment of the rights of human beings." (WHERE IS GOD?, John Sobrino, p. 134). Expressed here in the words of this notable liberation theologian is the very essence of what it means to be Christian. This is how we love God and love one another as ourselves. THIS IS HOW GOD LOVES US. Defending the rights, honor and glory of humans is the same as defending the rights, honor and glory of God, the source of all life. Because we are made in God's image and likeness, WHENEVER we do ANYTHING to defend, promote, or protect the rights of men and women, in society as well as in the Church, we are doing God's will. WE ARE FOLLOWING JESUS EVEN -- AND POSSIBLY ESPECIALLY -- WHEN OUR ACTIONS CONFLICT with human, civil, and Church laws. Not even the president of the United States may kill in the name of God! Not even the Pope may deny the rights of women! Not even the bishops own the Church! We are called to love God above all things, to love what God loves, and to speak out against any one who: 1. Commands that people die and be killed in the process. 2. Condones torture. 3. Supports killers and torturers in the name of God (even if they are supported by bishops). 4. Obeys humans laws while denying God's laws. 5. Squanders huge amounts of human resources to kill in the name of God.
