| Monsignor Anton Egger, mein Religionsprofessor in den fünfziger Jahren am Bundesrealgymnasium für Mädchen in Innsbruck, feiert am 17. August seinen 87. Geburtstag und ich rief ihn von Oklahoma an, um ihm persönlich alles Gute zu wünschen. Dies sind seine Gedanken über die Zukunft der Kirche, Gedanken eines treuen Priesters, der sein Leben Gott und der Kirche gewidmet hat. Wir sollten auf ihn hören. |
On 17 August 2000, Monsignor Anton Egger who in the fifties taught me religion at the Bundesrealgymnasium für Mädchen in Innsbruck, celebrates his 87th birthday. I called him from Oklahoma to wish him a happy birthday in person. These are his thoughts concerning the future of the church, the thoughts of a faithful priest who has dedicated his life to God and the church. We should listen to him. |
| IS: Ich will Ihnen einen frohen, gesegneten Geburtstag wünschen. Sind Sie jetzt 87 oder 88? |
IS: I want to wish you joyous, blessed birthday. Are you now 87 or 88? |
| AE: Ich bin jetzt 87, in13 geboren, also noch unter dem Kaiser Franz Josef und vor dem ersten Weltkrieg. Das sind entscheidungsreiche Jahre gewesen. Zum Beispiel, wenn ich lese, dass unsere Diözese Innsbruck heuer keine einzige Priesterweihe aus dem Weltklerus hat, glaube ich immer es ist vielleicht das, dass so wenige mehr Priester werden wollen, ein Hinweis von oben, dass wir uns ändern müssen, dass einfach die alte Priesterkirche nicht mehr für die neue Zeit passt. und dass sich da etwas ändert. Und gerade wieviel hat sich bereits geändert von unten! Nicht vom Papst und von der Leitung der Kirche, sondern von unten her -- die ganze Tätigkeit der Frau in der Kirche, das ist gewachsen und nicht befohlen worden von oben. Das is halt meine Meinung. Umbruch bringt immer auch Schwierigkeiten aber es bringt auch neue Hoffnung. |
AE: I am now 87, born in 1913, still under Emperor Franz Joseph and before the First World War. These have been decisive years. For example, when I read that in our diocese of Innsbruck not a single diocesan priest was ordained this year I suspect that the current scarcity of priestly vocations is a signal from above that we must change, that the old clerical church no longer fits contemporary times and that something is changing. And how much has already changed from below! Not initiated by the Pope and the leadership of the church, but from below. All of the contributions of women to the church, that is the result of natural growth and not a commandment from above. This is my opinion. Turning points always bring difficulties but they also bring renewed hope. |

IS: At the top they don't see the necessity for the turning point. They bristle with resistance. |
| AE: Das ist immer der Beamtenapparat, auch in den Staaten. Der ist immer für das Beharren und die Ausweitung seiner Kompetenzen. Dass möglichst niemand ihm dreinreden kann. Und das ist auch so in der Kirche. Unsere Obrigkeiten, die möchten das was ist behalten und sehen nicht, dass die Zukunft etwas anderes braucht. Ich bin der festen Überzeugung, dass das Priestertum der Frau kommen wird, dass auch der verheiratete Priester kommen wird. Also, dass verheiratete Männer zu Priestern geweiht werden. Wenn ich denke, wie viele Laien bei uns Theologie studieren und in den kirchlichen Dienst treten, ja, das ist doch auch ein Zeichen, dass man diese Berufe nicht verloren gehen lassen darf. |
AE: This is always the case with beaurocracies, in the political arena as well. They are always in favor of maintaining the status quo and expanding their sphere of influence. Trying to make sure that no one can interfere. And this is also the case in the church. Our leaders want to hold on to what is and don't see that the furture is in need of something else. I am totally convinced that women will be priests and there will be married priests. That is, married men will be ordained. When I consider how many lay people study theology with us and enter the service of the church, yes, this is also a sign that those vocations should not be allowed to get lost. |
| Erleben werd ich's nicht mehr, aber ich sehe die Zeichen der Zeit kommen. Die muss man sehen, und das müssten gerade die oben sehen! Wenn man denkt, wie der Beamtenapparat der Kurie, wie von da die Bischöfe behandelt werden! Ich weiss von einem österreichischen Bischof der angezeigt worden ist und einfach nach Rom berufen worden ist. Da sitzen drei Monsignore dort und kanzeln ihn ab, und er fragt, "Wer hat das geschrieben?" "Das geht Sie nichts an!" Er kann nicht einmal konkret erfahren, wer ihn da verdächtigt hat. Wie einen Lausbuben, holt man ihn nach Rom, beschimpft ihn, und lasst in gehen. |
It won't come during my life time, but I see the signs of the times. They must be seen. They ought to be seen especially by the leadership. If one realizes how the bureaucracy of the curia treats the bishops! I know of an Austrian bishop who was reported and simply ordered to come to Rome. There he is confronted by three monsignors reading him the riot act, and he asks, "Who wrote this?" "That's none of your business." He doesn't even have the chance to find out specifically who has denounced him. He is dragged to Rome like a juvenile delinquent, scolded, and dismissed. |
